Cumin is a warm-season crop, ideally suited to Mediterranean and Indian cuisine. Planting in early spring ensures sufficient time to reach maturity and develop flavorful, aromatic seeds. As an added bonus, consuming cumin seeds has been known to aid in digestion and has a long history of medicinal use. Enjoy the ferny foliage, reminiscent of dill, as a flavorful addition to salads and other dishes.

Plant seeds directly in the garden in the early spring after danger of frost has passed. Or, start seed indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Cumin requires a long, warm growing season to reach seed maturity. Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Seeds can be harvested when plant foliage has died back and seeds are plump and dark tan. Hang plants to dry, shake seeds off and grind to powder to use in your favorite dishes.
