Purple Dark Opal basil brings deep wine‑colored leaves rich in anthocyanins, turning salads, vinegars, and pestos into jewel‑tone dishes. The flavor is classic sweet basil with a hint of clove. Bred in the 1950s, it won an AAS award for both looks and taste. Pinch often to keep it leafy and delay flowering; blossoms will still draw bees when you finally let them open. Basil loves heat, regular water, and good drainage—stress can push it bitter. Use fresh for the brightest color, or dry for a dusky herbal tea. A single row adds flavor in the kitchen and drama in the bed.

Plant seeds directly into the garden starting 1-2 weeks after average last frost date, when air temperature is above 65°f. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-80°f. Or, start seed indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. You can keep plants from bolting by pinching back their flower stalks.
