Miss Jekyll love‑in‑a‑mist floats sky‑blue, lace‑collared blooms over finely cut foliage, then follows with curious, ballooned seed pods perfect for drying. Named for British garden writer Gertrude Jekyll, this 1910s selection gives cottage borders a dreamy, self‑sown look without getting weedy. Nigella seeds (“kalonji”) of other species are used as spice, but this ornamental is grown for flowers and pods, not the kitchen. Direct sow in cool soil; it resents transplanting. Let a few pods ripen and it will return lightly each year. If you want a soft veil between taller plants and paths, Miss Jekyll threads the space with charm and structure.

Plant seeds directly in the garden after average last frost date. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 60-75°f. Cover soil very lightly as seeds require light to germinate. Or, start seed indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Transplant to the garden 1-2 weeks after your average last frost date. Nigella is sensitive to transplant shock so carefully set in the garden.
