Musquée de Provence (Fairytale) is the French market classic—deeply ribbed, flattened wheels that mature to mottled tan with dense, fine-grained orange flesh. The name means “musky from Provence,” a nod to the variety’s aromatic sweetness and faint spice. In the kitchen it’s wonderfully versatile: roast wedges until caramelized, purée into velvet-smooth soups, bake into custardy pies and tarts, fold into risotto or couscous, or slice and grill for sandwiches and salads. A reliable long-keeper, flavor concentrates after curing and carries you well into winter. Rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A) and fiber, this is both centerpiece and pantry staple—beautiful on the table, even better on the plate.

Start seed indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 65-85 degrees. Transplant to the garden 2 to 3 weeks after your average last frost. Or, plant seeds directly in the garden 1-2 weeks after average last frost date. Sow 3-5 seeds per hill, thinning to a final 2-3 plants per hill. Pumpkins grow best in a warm site with full sun. Warm soil is essential to good seed germination and emergence. Using transplants can speed production.
