Common White yarrow (Achillea millefolium) sends flat-topped clusters of white blooms above feathery foliage and has an ancient reputation as a wound herb—Achilles supposedly used it to treat soldiers. It attracts beneficial predatory insects, tolerates drought, and stitches sunny plantings together with texture. Cut for fresh or dried arrangements; the heads hold form well. Yarrow can spread by rhizomes—plant where you can let it naturalize or divide it every few years. If you want a medicinal standby that also works hard for pollinators, white yarrow fits the bill.

Start seed indoors 8-10 weeks before transplanting into the garden. Light is required for germination. Optimum soil temperature for seed germination is 55-65°f. Keep seeds moist through bottom watering, or lightly misting soil surface making sure not to displace small seeds. Transplant to the garden after your average last frost date. Or, plant seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks after your average last frost date, or in the fall for spring germination. Makes an excellent cut flower, often used for herbal remedies and attracts beneficial insects.
